Tooth Contouring & Re-Shaping
Dental contouring and reshaping is a procedure that the Fairfield Dental Group offers to our patients who have minor aesthetic problems in their teeth that they want to get rid of.
The subtle changes that these cosmetic dentistry procedures can make to the teeth oftentimes have a major impact on a person’s overall appearance and self-confidence. Imperfections like irregularly shapped or chipped teeth, slightly overlapping teeth or very pointy cuspids can be easily fixed with our reshaping and contouring procedures.
How It’s Done
The technique involves the removal of little amounts of the outer covering of the tooth known as enamel in order to change the length, shape or surface of the tooth.
Generally speaking, the entire procedure requires only one visit to our clinic. It takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. During your appointment, we will examine your teeth so we can determine the extent of the work needed to accomplish our goal of improving your smile or correcting any bite problem. An X-ray may be required to make sure the teeth are healthy enough for the procedure.
Tooth contouring and reshaping entails the use of various tools to polish off areas on the enamel so that it can be shaped properly. You will probably feel some vibrations in your mouth as your tooth is gently shaped and polished especially in the edges.
After the procedure, you will notice that your teeth are more uniform in size and shape so they become less crowded and more attractive to look at.
Is It Painful?
Some of our patients often tell us they’re worried about the pain they might experience during the procedure. So we always reassure them that because it is only the tooth’s surface enamel that will be removed, it’s not going to be painful at all.
Occasionally, some of our patients experience minor sensitivity to cold and hot substances after the procedure but this usually goes away after a day or two.
Benefits of Tooth Contouring and Reshaping
Sometimes, a little change can go a long way in changing our appearance for the better and this is especially true with tooth contouring and reshaping. Here are its main benefits:
- Your smile will be vastly improved.
- It will help prevent plaque and tartar buildup which are common in overlapping teeth, thus improving your dental health.
- It’s painless so you won’t have any anxiety prior to the treatment.
- It’s very affordable. Many cosmetic dentistry procedures can cost thousands of dollars but tooth contouring and reshaping only cost around $50-$300/tooth.
